About Biodiversity Project: The national non-profit Biodiversity Project, based in Madison , Wisconsin , has been a leader since 1995 in the field of non-profit environmental communications, assisting hundreds of environmental and conservation groups nationwide with strategic, research-based approaches to action-oriented communications. Our publications have been used by universities around the United States and our clients and partners include major environmental groups, zoos and aquaria, and foundations in the U.S. and Canada .
Description: The Senior Communications Specialist will work with our Executive Director and our Communications Staff to implement current projects in the U.S. and Canada , including communications strategies and trainings for Great Lakes, Gulf of Maine , and other regional awareness campaigns and policy initiatives, as well as consulting with client organizations on a variety of communications needs. (Examples of current communications projects include: Great Lakes Forever, the Great Lakes Town Hall , the Healing Our Waters Great Lakes Restoration Campaign, Great Lakes Restoration – Canada , and the Great Lakes Compact.)
Additional duties include new program planning and development, fundraising through foundation research and proposal writing, outreach and prospecting for potential “fee-for-services” clients, public relations and media outreach, partner relations, internal organizational development, and may include Web development and Web site management.
Qualifications Candidates should possess demonstrated experience and skills in public communications planning and implementation, public opinion research and analysis, marketing, journalism and/or new media, environmental policy experience, and strong writing, presentation, and public speaking skills. Experience in a non-profit setting - including successful proposal writing and grants management - a degree in a communications-related field, project evaluation, public presentations, and a personal commitment to environmental advocacy are highly desired. A minimum of five-years professional experience is required.
An advanced degree in communications, the social sciences, or education is preferred, but strong professional experience and/or relevant professional training and development accepted. Candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, HTML or Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, and/or other related Web and print publishing and graphic design software.
Candidates must be versatile, self-starting, and adept at working on a variety of programs concurrently.
