The forests of the eastern United States harbor some of the most beautiful and threatened ecosystems on the planet.

These forests provide:
- clean drinking water to nearly one
   hundred million people
- recreation to millions
- jobs for thousands
- erosion control
- carbon sequestration

They are a defining part of our history -- the forests in which America grew up.

Yet opinion research shows that more Americans are concerned about protecting tropical rainforests than protecting forests close to home.
The purpose of this message kit is to help advocates and educators become more effective in communicating the value of Eastern Forests, the threats these forests face, and the things we must do to save them. We hope that by employing the recommendations, strategies, and resources you find here, you will be able to broaden the base of active support for the protection of Eastern Forests and their spectacular biodiversity.
