Five Ways Campaign: Make Smart Seafood Choices

Our seafood choices at the market counter and in restaurants have a direct impact on the health of ocean habitat and species, and on the fate of biodiversity - the great variety of animals, plants and ecosystems that support life on Earth.

With the growing demand for fish worldwide, many species have been fished to the brink of collapse. In addition to over-fishing, today's industrial-scale fishing methods often catch and waste vast numbers of other "non-commercial" species, or damage important ocean habitat such as reefs and seabeds. Degraded habitat and pollution add to the problem, as some species now carry high levels of toxic chemicals.

Healthy oceans, and the many things they provide for people, depend on diverse, healthy fish populations. Making smart choices about seafood is healthy for each of us, for our families, and for the Earth's oceans.

Fortunately, it is easy to make smart consumer choices that protect our fisheries and waters. Check out the following organizations that provide easy-to-use consumer guides for smart seafood shopping. Some will even send text messages to your phone!
